Scientific name: Passer diffusus
It is sometimes treated as a subspecies of the grey-headed sparrow. It is found in savanna and woodland in Angola and Zambia southwards into South Africa, where it is expanding its range.
It generally prefers savanna woodland, especially with Acacia, also occupying dry broad-leaved woodland, plantation edges, cultivated land and gardens. It has adapted to the modification of habitats by humans, causing its range to expand as far south as Betty's Bay in the Western Cape.
It eats seeds, fruit, nectar and insects, doing most of its foraging on the ground, often in flocks with other granivorous birds.
